You almost always need a phillips screwdriver, a pair of long nose pliers and a crescent wrench. You sometimes need a 'seat tool' to remove the valve seat if it's corroded. -This is an L shaped wrench with hex shapes at one side and square shapes at other .

Most if not all faucets are held down with either nuts around the hot and cold supply lines underneath or one center nut and a split washer. There is a wrench I would call a swivel head pipe wrench made to reach up behind the bowl of the sink and get to these. You can use regular pliers, but in either case, you will probably need to lay on your back under the sink to see what you are doing. The wrench if you get one should be around $10. It is just the teeth of a pipe wrench on a rod about 12 inches long.
