First, centre the steering wheel. make sure the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.
Disconnect the negative (-) terminal on the battery, and cover the terminal (in the trunk) with something plastic or rubber that will stop it making a connection to the body, and setting off the airbags.
If you have a 3 spoke steering wheel, behind the 2 upper spokes there is a Torx Screw that holds the airbag in place in the wheel.
Use a male T30 Torx screw driver, and remove the 2 screws.
Lift out the airbag module, and store in a safe place. Store the airbag with the black cover uppermost (BMW badge up) and the base on the ground. If the airbag should somehow detonate, no-one will be injured by the metallic base hitting them in the head.

This important pin location allows the steering wheel to rotate and maintain constant electrical contact with the steering column.
