There are many places in the world called called London.

Probably the most famous is the city of London, England, and below we list some 'towns' that are within that city.

It is worth bearing in mind that most cities of the world are comprised of communities that were formerly individual towns and villages.

Many cities have also retained the word 'town' to identify various urban and suburban districts within their boundaries.

ALTHOUGH we all know that a city is bigger than a town, there are actually no clear distinctions between them. Interestingly, the Oxford Dictionary defines a city as a large town!

Some cities have dropped the word 'town' but the former townships are very much part of their history. For example, the City of New York consists of many municipalities which were formerly very clearly called 'towns.' (See 'Related links' below)

London, capital of the UK, is no exception to this pattern.

(As a side point, the 'City of London' is a city within a city, but that is another matter!)

'GREATER LONDON' has a population of about 8m, and covers an area of over 600 sq miles (1,500 km2 ) and has evolved over the centuries from the growth and amalgamation of many small towns and districts. Some of these areas still retain the name 'Town' and some of them may not officially be called towns, but they still have their own local 'Town Halls.'

Without going into a discussion about what is a town and what isn't, here is a list of examples of 'towns' within the Greater London area:

2. Kentish Town
3. Camden Town
4. Chinatown -never a real town, but the name of an area inhabited by many Chinese people
5. 'London Town' -a particular suburb of London. The town, or London Town, is also a nickname used for the city of London.
6. Somers Town

In addition, many/most London districts/boroughs still use the term 'town' in local matters, although the word 'town' does not appear in place name listings of these conurbations.
