They probably used them for transportation.

Answer: The horse (chii in Crow) was certainly used for transporting people, tipi poles and covers, equipment, weapons and much more, but there were also many other uses.

Horses were used in hunting buffalo and other large game animals; a "buffalo runner" was specially trained to gallop very close to an adult buffalo (bison) so the hunter could shoot an arrow into the correct part of the animal. The horse must not flinch or shy away from the huge horns and must be controlled via the rider's legs, so he can use both hands for the bow and arrows.

Horses were used in warfare - a specially fast horse would be highly prized and never used for any other purpose. Such horses were painted with ritual markings and had their tails tied up in a knot, often decorated with feathers. Favourite horses would not be kept with the main herd, away from camp, but tied to the owner's tipi where it would be safe from enemy horse thieves.

Horses were also a measure of a man's status and wealth. The Crow warrior Two Leggings told how he was initially "very poor" (meaning he had few horses); after several horse raids against enemy tribes he was able to gather his own large herd. He wished to marry a young lady called Takes the Shield and offered some very fine captured horses to her father; he refused for some time but finally agreed. This was a usual custom among all Plains tribes; the horses would compensate the father for the loss of a daughter who would be responsible for much physical work around camp.

We are fortunate to have the testimony of several warriors and chiefs of the Crow tribe, who told their entire life stories to American writers they trusted and who included details of all aspects of Crow life.

In "Two Leggings; the Making of a Crow Warrior" by William Wildschut (later adapted by Peter Nabokov), Two Leggings recalled the way that camps were taken down, moved and re-erected; how meat was packed for transport back to the village, how war parties and even the entire village crossed rivers and waterways. The travois was a major method of transporting goods, children, meat, hides, tipi covers, old or sick people and so on over long distances. It consisted of two or more poles (sometimes tipi poles) tied together near their upper tips and attached to the shoulders of a horse with the thicker ends splayed and dragging on the ground behind. These lower ends could be joined with shorter poles or leather straps, with space for heavy loads or a framework of willow sticks to make a kind of cage (small children might travel inside). Pack horses would carry loads including parfleche (decorated rawhide) containers for clothing, food and small items.

For deep river crossings, small, flat rafts of suitable small willow logs tied together in a square or triangle would be covered with a fresh hide and goods would be piled on top. Long horsehair ropes were then attached to these rafts. Swimmers would grip the ropes in their teeth and (often supported by extra willow logs under their armpits) would swim across, pulling the rafts behind. Old people, children and the sick could also travel on the rafts.

Contrary to popular opinion, most Great Plains tribes did not use the "bull boats" of the Missouri River tribes.

A Crow war party, hoping to steal enemy horses, would travel very long distances on foot - the idea is that they would ride home on the stolen horses.
