The 1862, the Battle of Antietam was fought in Maryland. The Army of Northern Virginia fought against the Army of the Potomac. It was Lee versus McClellan.
Two armies gathered in sight of eachother and fought a battle. The army That Have Lost usualy fleed the battlefield
Vicksburg. It liberated the Mississippi.
A Battlefield gets the name because there WAS a Battle fought there. Not because someone named it a battlefield so the armies went there.So two armies come together and a Battle ensues. Before the invention of Tanks (and many other modern weapons) this area would normally be an open area that the two armies could advance and re-treat accross, Comanders could see the enemy and so on, so fields were the favorite setting.
