During the American Civil War, two major battles were fought on Union soil. The first occurred on September 17, 1862, in Antietam, Maryland, and resulted in a draw (although the Confederate invasion of the Union ceased at that point). The second occurred on July 1-3, 1863, in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and resulted in a Union victory.
Unfortunately i am not sure. Sorry :(

Abraham Lincoln went to see the battle field two weeks after the battle was fought.
Two armies gathered in sight of eachother and fought a battle. The army That Have Lost usualy fleed the battlefield
A Battlefield gets the name because there WAS a Battle fought there. Not because someone named it a battlefield so the armies went there. So two armies come together and a Battle ensues. Before the invention of Tanks (and many other modern weapons) this area would normally be an open area that the two armies could advance and re-treat accross, Comanders could see the enemy and so on, so fields were the favorite setting.

The Battle of Antietam was fought in 1863. This was one of the two battles fought on Union soil. Lee was close to Washington DC, and he was given the 'OK' to try to capture the Union capitol. this did not work out as planned. After the bloody battle, Lincoln had enough. He decided to finally take a stand on slavery. Because of this battle, the Emancipation Proclamation was issued to free the slaves on the Confederate side.To find out more on what the Proclamation stated, go to the search engine and ask!Hopefully this will help those who ask about the Civil War.

The siege of Petersburg was an example of "Trench Warfare", with two armies facing each other in an endless battle of attrition, like those which would have been fought during the WW1 on the European western front.
