In what is now the United States- Maryland, founded by Cecil Calvert, Lord Baltimore, was predominately Catholic. In l634, was founded Baltimore. All of the Spanish Colonies in the New World were Catholic- look at the long chain of cities in California that are all named after Saints, starting with San Francisco in the North, and going all the way South to the City of the Angels! By the way Farrah Fawcett"s Funeral mass was held at the Cathedral of our Lady of the Angels church- in L.A. an obvious choice considering her role in (Charlie"s Angels). Father Serra, the real life Brother Juniper, was the main leader behind the church colonization of the Californian Missions- which brought about the Mission style in architecture also. All of the older cities in California have churchly names, Santa Cruz ( holy Cross) San Luis Obispo- St. Louis the Bishop ( not the same as the French St. Louis who was certainly a crusading type!) The influence of Father Serra is stil felt on the map- of California.
