The United States and the Soviet Union were the two countries on opposite sides during the Cold War. The Cold War ended in 1991.
The U.S. intervened twice in Lebanon during the years 1958 and 1982.
The early 1980's was perhaps the climax during the Cold War as the US and USSR continued to grow their troops and nukes exponentially. The most notable anti-communist movement in the 1980's was the one in Afghanistan. The USSR invaded Afghanistan in 1979 to install a Communist regime, the US then created and supported the Taliban to fight them. The Cold War slowly came to an end as the Soviet economy stagnated in 1985, the whole world watched as the USSR withdrew troops from foreign countries and allowed freedom of speech until it collapsed.
