Germany is the most likely answer to this question, though the question should be, Which country was re-unified in 1989?
The 4 major allied forces (France. England, United States and Soviet Union) occupied Germany after its defeat in 1945. This ended the European portion of World War II. Over several years of occupation by the 4 allies political tensions between The Soviet Union and the rest of the allies could not agree on terms to end the occupation of the conquered German territory. England, France and the United States ended the occupation of their sectors of Germany while The Soviet Union refused to allow reunification of their German "Eastern Sector" with the other three sectors thereby splitting Germany in two. There was no clearer division of the two countries than The Berlin Wall which surrounded the West Berlin (which was within the Eastern/Soviet Sector of Germany).
When the Soviet Union collapsed during the velvet revolution in late 1989 the Berlin Wall fell. The closed border that had separated the two countries was opened for the first time in over 40 years. On October 3, 1990 East Germany was absorbed into West Germany. West Germany changed its name back to Germany.
The country that was the center of what came to be known as The Velvet Revolution did split in two shortly after the collapse of The Soviet Union. Czechoslovakia split into The Czech Republic and Slovakia on January 1, 1993. But the beginning of the schism occurred in 1989.
Yugoslavia also disintegrated into its 7 constituent states as a result of the Soviet collapse. The disintegration was along old pre-world-war 1 borders.
Finally, most of the old United Soviet Socialists Republics (USSR) (What many inappropriately call "Russia") became independent countries of their own right months and years after the Soviet collapse creating 15 new countries with the Russian Federation being the largest and most influential.
