There are multiple methods for getting data into your public information system. Categorically, these can be broken down into:
- Manual Data Entry, which occurs when humans enter data into a system through the use of electronic forms, and
- Automatic or Automated Data Entry, which occurs through various electronic channels that include but are not limited to:
- Real Time Data Feeds, such as those that come from solutions such as message queues and HTTP transmissions
- Batch File Load, such as through Extract Transformation and Load (ETL) solutions
Electronic Data can come from many different types of data channels, such as:
- Telephone (voice or Interactive Voice Response)
- FAX
- Message Queues
- Web Services
- File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
- HTTP
- TCP/IP
When dealing with information systems, it is most common for the data to be "digital" in nature, even if it has to be converted from an analog source, such as an audio system.

How do information system work?
An information system also know as a MIS is used to store information within a company or organization. It will contain raw facts and figures that have no meaning because they have not been processed yet. It will be inputted into the information by a member of staff so that the data can be processed. It is important that that the person inputting the data is as accurate as possible, as the information system relies on correct data to be inputted to work properly. The data inputted into the system has to be accurate to ensure that it doesn't end up messing up the companies data as this can affect cost and timescales. How they work? Raw data is inputted into the the information system by a person. Once the data has been inputted the information system will be able to demine what happens with it, by sorting it out into different fields and sections. Not sure if this is correct..
