If you mean "metro" as in Washington D.C.'s commuter train system, then they work by using a third rail electric line that powers electric motors on the cars that turn the wheels directly. The electricity is taken in by an electric contact shoe that pokes out the side and contacts the live third rail.

Never touch the third rail or any live components of any electrified railroad. These components do not run at low voltages.
