The active drug in cigarettes is nicotine. As a stimulant, nicotine produces wakefulness and alertness. However, due to its addictive properties, tolerance and dependence accrue farily quickly. Thus, withdrawal symptoms occur, often just minutes after the previously inhaled dose, and these symptoms include anxiety, motor tension, fatigue and irritability, among others. In the process of treating withdrawal syymptoms by lighting up the next cigarette, relief is obtained. Paradoxically, this accounts for the sense of calm experienced by the smoker, while using products which contain nictoine, a stimulant.
Cigarettes also contain hundreds of other ingredients, including tar, carbon monoxide and other chemical toxins. Tar (and other substances) gradually destroys the cilia (wavy hairs) of the respiratory tract, and eventually destroys lung cells, as well, setting the stage for COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). Also, carcinogens in cigarette smoke predispose the user to cancer,, increasingly over time. Also, smoking contributes to coronary artery disease and places the user at increased risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Since one quarter of the populace smokes cigarettes, it is considered a major public health hazard, secondary smoke notwithstanding. It is one of the top preventable causes of heart disease, cancer, strokes and respiratory diseases (which make up the leading causes of death in the U.S.).

FCS cigarettes are making me sick. After reading the 2000+ signatures and comments on the petition to Repeal Fire Safe Cigarettes, I see that many others are also having health problems caused by FCS cigarettes. Is this issue Class Action worthy ?
A class action lawsuit is certainly a possibility, however, many states are passing laws requiring these type of fire safe cigarettes which may give them a certain amount of protection in the eyes of the court. If you are looking to recoup health care costs resulting from smoking these, however, an individual lawsuit may be a better way to go as class action proceeds are spread out among thousands, including the attorneys.
