By definition, assault rifles use intermediate cartridges. With what's currently in service and/or in circulation, that typically narrows it down to 5.56x45, 5.45x39, and 7.62x39. The Chinese recently adopted a 5.8x42 cartridge, and the old StG 43 - the first true assault rifle - still turns up from time to time in various conflicts, particularly in Lebanon. That used a 7.92x33 cartridge, which was a scaled down cartridge based on the full power 7.92x57 cartridge.
There's also lots of specialty/limited use cartridges coming out now, such as the 6.5 Grendel, 6.8x43 Remington SPC, .50 Beowulf, .458 SOCOM, etc.

The term 'assault rifle' or 'assault weapon' is often incorrectly applied from a political standpoint - semi-auto firearms are not assault rifles.
Assault rifles made their appearance during WW2. However, the british used a machine gun in world war 1 called the Bren that was quite like an assault rifle of the day.

An AK-47 is a gun which is a selective fire, gas operated 7.62mm assault rifle developed in the Soviet Union by Mikhail Kalashnikov in the 1940s. The AK stands for втомат Калашникова 47 (Avtomat Kalashnikova 47) - Kalashnikov automatic rifle, model of 1947.The AK-47 was one of the first true assault rifles and, due to its durability, low production cost and ease of use, the weapon and its numerous variants remain the most widely used assault rifles in the world --- so much so that more AK-type rifles have been produced than all other assault rifles combined.
This is a type of firearm that instead of using a clip or magazine, makes the user input the ammo in the front of the weapon together with wadding and gunpowder. This is used for cannons and old style rifles and flintlock pistols.
Traditional spring-type 'BB' guns are designed to shoot round copper or steel 'BB's. Most 'Air rifles/pump-type BB guns' are also able to accept 'pellets' as ammo, which are used for taking down larger rodents, birds, etc. The pellets are usually made out of lead and act similar to 'slug' type ammo when fired. They are more accurate and do more damage.

Most AR-type rifles are chambered for the 5.56x45 cartridge - the standard cartridge used by NATO (and also by several non-NATO) forces for their military's assault rifles. They can also chamber the .223 Remington cartridge, although a firearm with a dedicated .223 Remington chamber should not be used for military 5.56x45 ammunition.
