The western part of the Roman Empire fell because of invasions by Germanic peoples from central Europe which stared in 406. These peoples eventually took over all the lands for this part of the empire except for Italy The eastern part of the Roman Empire was not affected by these invasions and continued to exist for another 1,000 years.
The rich lived in large detached houses called domus. The insula (plural, insulae) were apartment blocks which could be up to 6 or 7 floors high. The ground floor had shops and workshops. The middle class lived on the lower floors and had running water. The poor lived on the higher floors. These floors were less safe in case of fire. The living quarters became smaller on the uppermost floors. The poor lived in overcrowded rooms without running water or cooking facilities. They went there only to sleep. They eat outdoors, went to outdoor public toilets and washed at the baths.
The villa urbana was a holiday or retreat house of the rich. The villa rustica was the farmstead of large landed estates.
The Romans had public buildings called basilica (plural, basilicae). They could have administrative offices, the courts and shops. The temples were places for worshiping the god(s) they were dedicated to. The amphitheatres were arenas for games. The Romans also had theatres. The baths sometimes were large building complexes which hosted many facilities. The Horreum (plural, horrea)was a public warehouses.
In addition to the above, Rome was able to build aquaducts throughout the empire in order to provide fresh water to its public baths and for drinking.The Romans are credited with the arch, as used in bridge and building supports to this day, and as seen throughout history in the form of buttresses and vaulted naves for churches. The Romans were the first civilization to use a "keystone", a central stone usually used in the center of an arch where geometry requires a wedge-shaped stone instead of a standard block.
