1951 was the first year Ford/Mercury offered an automatic transmission. They are called "ford-O-Matic" or "Merc-O-Matic". They are relatively rare.
The alternative is using a late-model Ford C-4 trans or a Turbo 350, with an adapter kit. These kits are available from "Flat-o" and transmission adapters dot com. and probably more sources.
