The most common is a 12 volt DC lead/acid battery. The batteries main use is to operate the starter motor to start the main engine. When the engine is running an alternator or generator powers all the systems and also re-charges the battery.

These batteries vary somewhat in physical size and power. Average measurements are about 8x8x10 inches and average power is around 700 cold crank amps. They have two terminals, one positive and one negative, often on top or sometimes on one side.
