I believe and am hoping the Red Naval grows OK in Zone 9. Also certain lemon tress and Satsuma tangerine is said to grow in Zone 9. I have the same problem and am experimenting and planting with crossed fingers :-).

Technically, you can grow any type of lemon tree variety your heart desires. Also, you can grow lemon Trees from any seed. Common store bought varieties such as Eureka or Lisbon would grow from seed practically anywhere! I live in Montreal, and Winters are EXTREMELY cold, I went to a restaurant last summer which had 2 semi-full grown lemon and lime trees with FRUIT!!! Obviously the plants are stored indoors for the winter, but the lemon trees still grew. Therefore, you can grow any lemon tree anywhere.
Actually, Yes, they do have thorns. Citrus trees sold at nursery centers are usually hybrids, and are bred not to have thorns. My son planted 10 fresh orange seeds 2 yrs ago, and they have thorns on them, so I suppose they reverted back to their original thorny state. Most citrus trees have thorns in the wild to keep animals away from the fruit.
