The Iowa, Ioway or Báxoje tribe originally lived in the area of the Red Pipestone Quarry in Minnesota, later moving to the Platte River and finally into Kansas and Nebraska. They were a Siouan people, closely related to the Oto, Missouri and Winnebago.
They lived a typical marginally Plains lifestyle, combining semi-permanent villages and agriculture with occasional buffalo hunting.
Men wore breechclout, leggings and moccasins of soft-tanned deer hide (buckskin); shirts were seldom worn and were made like ponchos with open sides and underarms. Leggings had the seam down the front of the leg and were gartered below the knee; long fringes at the lower edge covered most of the moccasin.
At first women wore a buckskin skirt tied with a belt and a poncho-like buckskin top worn only in cool weather. Leggings were short and tied below the knee. By the 1840s women were almost all wearing full-length cotton dresses obtained from white traders.
Moccasins were originally soft-soled with a side seam and tall ankle flaps. Later the hard-sole Plains style was adopted.
Warriors shaved most of the head except for a scalplock and some wore an attached roach of deer hairs dyed red; there were also different hairstyles for the boys of different clans. Women wore two long braids, which were sometimes tied together to hang down the middle of the back.
Turbans of fur, otterskin, cloth or woven sash were frequently worn by warriors.
