Hail Storms can bring a ton of damage to homes, and especially those vulnerable rooftop air conditioning units. In Dallas, I have seen softball size hail that will damage air conditioners badly. If the hail hits in the right spot right on the vulnerable fan vents, it can break through and damage the fans and any other internal components. So it really depends on the size and severity of the storm to determine how much damage the hail can really do. Also something to keep in mind if you notice hail damage to your AC unit is that your roof may also have sustained damage during the onslaught. I would have both inspected especially if there is visible damage.
Most often, hail may form because of the updraft that a storm will create. The attached links will give you more information on hail and tornadoes.
comprehensive coverage...
Hail is common in Michigan as it is in many states, especially in the American Midwest. Asking this question during the summer, the default answer would be "no longer than a week ago, probably...". Additionally, Michigan is a very large area, and hail only occurs along a very narrow storm track (perhaps a few miles wide in most instances). So you need to be more specific in area, and also what you would define a "hail storm". Obviously large and excessive hail occurs less frequently than the benign pea size hail most commonly observed. You can find all hail reports of more than 1" in diameter at the link below (Storm Prediction Center) for any day going back a number of years. Just type the date in "past storm reports" and look for green or black markers over Michigan.
Answer No. If it was caused by something happening (tree falling, hail storm, etc), then it would cover it. Deterioration over time will not be covered. If you need to file a claim because something happened to break your roof, then you need to think about this in the long term before filing. Some things to consider: What is your deductible? If it is $1000 and the roof will cost $1200, then filing for the extra $200 is not worth it. Your premiums go up after filing any claim (no matter the reason) by about 30% for years - you will want to consult your policy for the exact amount of time. So do the math and decide before filing. Your agent can also help you decide before filing, your premium wont go up for just talking about it with your agent. If you had leaks in the roof due to lack of maintenance and leaks occurred in the roof then no it would no cover this type of damage. Home insurance covers damage that is "sudden and accidental" and caused by a covered cause, it does not cover maintenance, normal wear, and damage that happened over a period of time.
A supercell is a specific type of storm. Supercells are the strongest class of thunderstorm, characterized by a strong, rotating updraft called a mesocyclone. Supercells are known for their ability to produce very large hail and violent tornadoes.
It is important to contact your insurance provider right away after any type of damage. Most, if not all, companies provide storm damage coverage but make sure you study your policy as there are so many different types of storm damage (wind, hail, lightning, etc.)
a hailstorm is a type of storm with large amounts of hail
There are no real hail proof roofs but there are hail ratings of roofs rated 1 - 4 with 4 being the highest rating. A rubber roof is not your only option and the best type of roof for you will depend on if your roof is flat or sloped.
Hail storms and strong winds can damage any type of roof. Slate roofing has a long history and is generally known as one of the highest quality, longest lasting roofing materials on the market. On the other hand, the high cost, difficult installation, and relative fragility of slate roofing means it’s not ideal for everybody.
As far as I know there is not. The type of roof, way that the shingles were installed, age of the shingles, number of layers of shingles, and many other factors all affect how a roof ages. I would suggest that if you are dealing with your insurance company you contact an engineering firm who specializes in this to conduct a study of your roof.

No. While tornadoes may cause the most severe damage of any type of storm, hurricanes cause a greater quantity of damage because they affect a much larger area.
