Of the three devices, all were apparently using a combination of potassium chlorate, aluminum powder, and sulfur. In the car bomb, a TNT booster was employed. The car devices were apparently connected with 150m of deta-cord. Rumours that the bombers used C4 or Semtex (C3) circulated at first, due to the perceived high-speed propagation of the overpressurization radius, but later investigation may have showed instead that the rather huge amount of explosive in the car bomb may have created a thermobaric effect (rare in slower, unsophisitcated explosives such as these). I'm also guessing that spectrographc analysis of what turned out to be deta-cord raised flags for C3/Semtex, as the core of deta-cord is made of a compound present in C3/Semtex. However, these ideas have been debunked, and the explosive at this time is thought to be as described above.
