OpenOffice is not a file type. It is rater a Office/Productivity suite, such as Microsoft Office or Sun StarOffice, which includes programs such as writer ( kinda like word), clac (kinda like excel), base (kinda like - how is it called again - ), impress (kinda like powerpoint), and draw (much better than paint). It is coded in Java.
OpenOffice doesn't usually autosave a file. It's down to the user to save their work periodically.
