It depends on the year and transmission type (4 spd, 5spd, 6spd) ... but here are some general guidelines: Most 1987-1997 F250 with either the Mazda or S5-42 ZF manual transmission require DEXRON/MERCON fluid. 1999-2007 models with the S5-47 5 spd or ZF S-650 6 spd manual transmission also calls for DEXRON/MERCON. If you were referring to an older 70s-80s model truck with 3 spd or 4 spd manual, it takes 80W (or 80W90 ... or 75W90) gear oil.
Not sure what year your truck is, but up to 2007 uses Ford Mercon ATF (auto transmission fluid).
Store under the drain pan of the transmission.
