Motorcraft MERCON automatic transmission fluid in your 4x4 transfer case
Motorcraft MERCON automatic transmission fluid for the transfer case in a 1996 F-150 according to the owners manual
The fluid level ( MERCON ATF ) should be at the bottom of the FILL hole when you pull the FILLER plug on your transfer case
According to the 1996 Ford F-150 Owner Guide ( 2.0 quarts / 1.9 liters ) of Motorcraft MERCON automatic transmission fluid is used in the Borg Warner 1356 transfer case
Well this is a fairly straight forward process. You're going to have to remove both drive-shafts at the transfer case, they can hang there. Then remove the electrical connections at the speed sensor and the 4 wheel actuator. Drain the fluid out of the transfer case. Be careful, there will be fluid coming out between the case and the transmission when you get the bolts out of the transfer case. I believe they are 13mm headed bolts. About 6 of them. If your stout enough, you can separate the transfer case, let it swivel down from the alignment dowel pins and slide it out without the use of a floorjack. The case itself isn't very heavy at all. Good luck.
check metal tag on transfer. for info.
transfer case is prolly blown up
D.O.T. ( 3 ) brake fluid ( meeting Ford specification ESA-M6C25-A )
