Kwanzaa is based on the year-end harvest festivals that have taken place throughout Africa for thousands of years. The harvests include fruits, nuts, and vegetables. Sweet potato pie, collard greens and black-eyed peas are at the center of any traditional Kwanzaa feast. A mat, called a mkeka, is set out to symbolize the foundation upon which communities are based. As part of tradition, one ear of corn for each child is placed on the mkeka along with the other specially prepared foods.
