In 1600, New Jersey was not yet a separate entity with its own government. It was part of the larger colonial territory known as New Netherland, which was under the control of the Dutch West India Company. The Dutch West India Company governed the region and established trading posts and settlements, including New Amsterdam (now New York City).
The first type of government in colonial New Jersey was called a Concession type of government.
