Spain had a monarchy and various republics before the revolution began in 1936. When Generalissimo Francisco Franco won the civil war Spain became a Dictatorship. Franco brought the Grandson of the last King of Spain back to Spain and groomed him to take over when Franco died. When Franco died (1975) King Juan Carlos established a Constitutional Monarchy.
