The symphony orchestra includes many different types of instruments in order to provide a broad range of sounds and feelings. The most common types are strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. String instruments are the "bread and butter" of the orchestra and includes violin, viola, cello, bass, and harp. The majority of members in the group are strings, and this section is the most soothing to listen to. Woodwinds can provide a variety of tones using Flute, piccolo, Oboe, bassoon, clarinet, and less commonly Saxophone. The brass section is important for adding volume and power to the group and most often contains trumpets, french horns, trombones, and a tuba. Finally, percussion varies greatly with the choices of the composer. Sometimes there is no percussion, sometimes it is the featured section. Percussion is most often composed of a timpani and sometimes snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, and a variety of other instruments. Percussion is most often present to add a sense of rhythm, dynamics, and texture to the song. Also, piano is present most often as a solo instrument, and piano incorporates elements of both string and percussion sections.
Basically the four families of instruments:
Strings, Woodwinds, Brass and Percussion. The actual instrument count in each of the "families" depends upon the composers direction and instructions.

Saxophones are reed instruments not normally found in a symphony orchestra.
Why would they be any different to instruments in any symphony orchestra? Maybe their distinctive feature is being in Chicago?
The main ones are the oboe, clarinet, and bassoon.
Except for any instruments that were invented later, the symphony orchestra in the Romantic era was essentially what it is now.
Phonic spelling of orchestra. A symphony orchestra is a large instrumental group consisting of string, brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. A chamber orchestra is half the size but contains the same 4 types of instruments.

It depends on the orchestra. Symphony orchestra- no. Ethnic orchestra- might be.
The first symphony orchestra was in Germany.
Not really... although the terms are generally used synonomously, these days. An orchestra is defined as an ensemble of different families of instruments. So, that could include concert bands, big bands and the jazz orchestra (big band, 2 horns and strings), among others. A symphony is a specific musical form, usually played by a (fairly) specific ensemble. So, the term "symphony orchestra" is literally an ensemble capable of playing that kind of piece... thus the modern symphony orchestra. Generally, the term "symphony orchestra" is more specific, when talking about the classical ensemble.
