Typically 3 series BMW's use 5w-30 or 5w-40 motor oil. This information is coming from my Haynes repair manual( section 1-1 in the book) for BMW 3 series 99-2005. Make SURE you use ONLY FULL SYNTHETIC fluid!! I use in my 2001 325Ci coupe Royal Purple 5w-30, it's about $9.00 a quart, but it's one of the best oil brands you can buy, and it will make your engine run better and last longer. As always check your owners manual to see the specified fluid.
