I have run 10w40 in both my 95 VT1100 and my 07 VTX1300. just be sure to change the filter too and make sure the oring gasket on the filter is set correctly in the end of the filter. Lube the ring just like you would a car oil filter.
I run Valvoline or Honda oil when on sale.
