It originally took R-12, unless its been converted to an R-134a system. Look at the threads on the ports. If they are male threads its still an R-12 system and can be converted to R-134a with a conversion kit purchased at your local Auto parts store and some Wal-Marts. If the threads are on the inside then it has already been converted to an R-134a system.
