The Kwakiutl Indians, also known as the Kwakwakaâ??wakw tribe, are considered to be Pacific Northwest Coast indigenous people. They live in northern Vancouver Island and adjoining mainland and islands located around Johnstone Strait and Queen Charlotte Strait. They live in plank homes.
The Inuit are Northern Canadian natives who are commonly referred to as Eskimos (which, whilst probably innocent in origin, is regarded as pejorative by some). As every child would tell you, Eskimos live in an igloo, referring to a snow shelter. However, the Inuit word "Iglu" refers to any house or home whatever material it is made from, ranging from snow shelters to traditional tents, sod houses and modern buildings. Their homes were made of whatever material was available for the specific site and/or season.
The tribes of the Pacific Northwest differed in food, dwellings, etc. according to their exact location. As far as housing/shelter, there were two basic types.
The Nootka people lived on the west coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Seafarers by trade, they used the cedar from the rain forests for shelter, canoes, clothing and fuel. Their cedar-plank houses (longhouses) housed up to 35 related people.
The Squamish peoples lived in what is now southwestern British Columbia, Canada. They lived in villages of Longhouses which held an extended family . The exact size of the building depended on the size of the family. Living in a rainforest, the buildings were constructed of cedar, as were their canoes.
The shelter for Kwakiutl Indians were plank houses. They lived in the Northwest, and had clothes made out of bark and skins. Their transportation was dugout canoes.
