It's a supervolcano. It's not like a normal volcano because it happens because of a magma chamber underground. because of the volume of the chamber, the magnitude of the volcano is a lot bigger - VEI 8 on the Richter scale

The Yellowstone caldera is actually located over a 'hot spot' in the Earth's mantle. Over time, as the lithosphere (crust and hard uppermost mantle) moves over the fixed hot spot, the location of the caldera will change.

Yellowstone is over a hot spot, where extra material rises throught he mantle. Some of this melts beneath the crust and rises toward the surface to produce volcanic activity.
