It sounds like you have encountered a security screw. Product manufactures put these screws on pieces they would rather you not mess with. You can buy a kit with different driver bits for various security screws at most tool and hardware stores. Be careful with anything you find once you remove that screw, it is likely there to prevent you from damaging the product or hurting yourself.
