The Roman's world view was heavily influenced by the world views of the Greeks. They adopted Greek astronomy, the works of their geographers and much of their mythology. They gained a better knowledge of northern Europe through their conquests in central Europe. However, though influenced by the Greeks, their religion remained distinctly Roman. The Romans also became quite multicultural and absorbed influences form many of the peoples they conquered, besides the Greeks. They thought that they were superior to the barbarians. This was a Greek word they borrowed and meant foreigners and was derogatory. To the Romans it usually referred to the peoples who lived outside their empire, though it was sometimes used for some peoples within the empire whom they thought were less civilised.

Why do people have different views about the roman empire?

The Roman Empire was a large, historically influential empire that lasted for about a thousand years (longer, if we include the Eastern Roman Empire, or the subsequent Holy Roman Empire) and it did many different things, some good, and some bad, and some which might have been either good or bad, depending upon how you look at them. In other words, it is a complicated subject. It is therefore understandable that people have different views about it.

That took killing millions of Red Indians and the life of even more millions of black slaves But in the view of Aristotle superiority and slavery of inferior humans are 'natural'.
