The area and country that you live in will list what types of turtles are OK to own as pets. Some species are illegal to own in some areas so you should take the time to do some research on the species that can be kept as pets in your area.
You should also do some research on the different species so that you can find one that will fit your lifestyle. If you have children and or would like to hold it I strongly suggest that you get a red eared slider.
