This is a bit confusing. The 43rd was the unit. It was composed of 100 soldiers, who serviced a 36 bed mobile medical unit, and I do not find any reference to any subordinate units. The 43rd was deactivated on 6/11/97 at Camp Humphreys, South Korea. There were units that served side by side with the 43rd, but I do not believe there were any units subordinate to it. It was too small, barely much larger than platoon strength.

The 43rd Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) was typically assigned medical personnel and equipment from the Army Medical Department. This included soldiers from various specialties such as doctors, nurses, surgeons, anesthetists, and support staff. The exact units assigned to the 43rd MASH may have varied depending on the specific deployment or mission.

Who wrote the book about MASH 4077?

The story of MASH 4077 was set down in a book MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors by Richard Hooker, who was a doctor of the first Korean MASH 8055 (later the 43rd Surgical Hospital). The Robert Altman movie and CBS television series were enhanced by further memories of other folks assigned to the 8055 and other Korean MASH units.

No, the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) was a fictional unit depicted in the TV series "MAS*H." The show, set during the Korean War, was loosely based on the experiences of real-life MASH units, but there was no specific 4077th MASH in Korea.

Is story Mash a fraud?

MASH, the book, movie and television series, is certainly not a fraud. They are based on real life (fictionalized) events of the first Korean MASH unit (July 1950). The book is written by Robert Hooker, and actual surgeon from MASH 8055. The story lines of the first several years of the CBS television series were taken from memories by actual former army personnel assigned to MASH units.

How did MASH units get their names What does the number stand for For example the 4077 or 8063 mash Is that how many units there were is it a coordinate or does it stand for something else entirely?

No. There were not nearly that many MASH units. It's just how they were numbered. For example, if you see a reference to the 82nd Airborne Division, it does not mean that there are eighty-one others.

The book MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors by Richard Hooker, produced a movie, television series and several TV spin offs. It is based loosely on experiences of doctors and nurses in the first Korean based MASH unit 8055 which later became the 43rd Surgical Hospital.

What happened to mash 8055?

MASH 8055 was the unit that MASH 4077 of the book, movie and television series was patterned after. It was the first Mobile Army Surgical Hospital to be activated in South Korea in July 1950. In 1952 it was re-designated at the 43rd Mobile Army Surgical Hospital and finally had a permanent at Camp Humphreys where it was deactivated in 1997.
