A person can get Windows 7 to manage wireless connections by enabling the wireless network manager under the control panel. Windows will then remember all connections made and automatically connect to them when in range.

This depends on the wireless card vendor, but for Linksys, right-clicking on the green wireless icon in the notification area will give you the option to use Windows to manage the wireless connection.If that does not work, you can jump straight to the Network Connections panel by clicking Start -> Run (or just Start in Vista) and typing in ncpa.cpl . Click on start Right click on "Network" and go to properties. That opens the "Network and Sharing Center". On the left hand column click on "Manage Network Connections." This opens the Network Connections Window, it will list all of your NICs or Wireless Connections. Right click and go to properties of the connection you would like to statically assign. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) and click properties. Now you will be able to enter in your IP, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and DNS addresses and click OK. Close the Network Connections Window and you're running with your new IP.
There should be no need to remove the wireless card, you can just disable it..... Vista - right click connections icon in bottom right corner of screen>>>>click 'Network and sharing centre' >>>> click 'Manage Network Connections >>>Right click 'Wireless Network Connection'>>>left click 'Disable' Then just install the USB adapter
