Popular modern myth says that ancient Egyptians took oaths while holding an onion, even adding symbolic meanings to the shape of the onion (eternity and so on).
Sadly this "fact" does not stand up to close investigation: any gardener knows that onions are not available out of season and even when dried will not last right through to next growing season - meaning that there must be times when no onions were available. There is no evidence for the Egyptians drying onions to preserve them. Nobody has explained why a supposed symbol of eternity should have any connection with taking an oath; eternity was all about the afterlife, the realm of the dead and the enduring spirit. Further, none of the people quoting this "fact" give an original Egyptian source for it - they simply quote what someone else has said in modern times. This is exactly how popular fake facts are distributed.
