"Vegetarian" in popular culture is a very flexible term ranging from strict vegans who eat no animal derived foods and use no animal products such as leather. The other end of the scale is composed of people who enhance the vegetable and fruit part of their diets while adding some animal products such as milk, eggs, chicken, fish and similar non-red meat dishes. The case for "doesn't look like" animal foods such as jello worries those closer to the vegan end of the spectrum than the liberal types. Many inexperienced vegetarians think they just have to eat tasty fruits and veggies without understanding that essential oils, vitamins and proteins require a more complex diet with supplements.
Vegetarians do not eat:
Flesh from any animals - land animals, sea animals, fish, birds, insects, crustaceans, mollusks.
Meat and meat by-products.
Jello, marshmallows, and candies made with Gelatin.
Cheese made with rennet.
Kidney, liver, tripe, baloney, salami.
Anything that requires the slaughter of animals
Vegetarians eat nothing that used to have a heart beat, or carried blood. As in chickens, cows, horses, pigs, deer, moose, fish, clams, shrimp, anything like that.
Lard.
Vegetarians eat plants and plant products. Some vegetarians eat dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt) and/or eggs. If you eat/drink dairy, you are a lacto-vegetarian. If you eat eggs, you are an ovo-vegetarian. If you eat both, you are a lacto-ovo-vegetarian (or ovo-lacto-vegetarian).
Strict vegetarians also avoid animal-derived products such as gelatin and cochineal (sometimes known as carmine coloring).
Some vegetarians, such as vegans, also don't eat honey, eggs and/or dairy foods.
Some people who eat fish or other animals, but not mammals, call themselves vegetarian, but are not true vegetarians.
For the most part people who consider themselves vegetarian don't eat meat, this includes fish and chicken.
