The Baitoushan Volcano last erupted circa 1702 and has been dormant since. Record keeping was spotty, but it is said that it spread pumice in a 25 mile diameter and erupted 25KM into the stratosphere in it's +/-969 AD, one of the largest eruptions in 2000 years.
Mt. Vesuvius erupted in AD 79 burying the city of Pompeii.

In general, an active volcano is one that has erupted within historic time. In regions where the historic record is very short (such as Canada), an active volcano is defined as one that has erupted within the last 200 years. Canada has one historically active volcano, Tseax cone. Its 1775 eruption killed an estimated 2000 Nisga'a First Nations people.
A volcano which has not erupted in the last 2000 years.

Not much; it has already erupted in the recent past (December 2000) spewing lava, ash and volcanic debris. There is a disaster management plan set in place for all communities close to the volcano; in case volcanic activity increases, people would be evacuated to safer zones.
