The Thirty Years War. It was a religious war, which was pretty bloody, in fact, the death count was more than WW1 and the Napoleonic Wars combined. The amount of deaths and tragedy provoked Enlightenment thinkers to create better political and social systems to avoid further conflicts. The Thirty Years War also proved that Christianity is unstable, forcing many thinkers to turn to Deism.
