The Holy Roman Empire was abolished during the Napoleonic Wars, when Emperor Francis II abdicated after being defeated by Napoleon.

The Treaty of Pressburg ended the Holy Roman Empire as it forced the Emperor to renounce his title as Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, following which Napoleon created the Confederation of the Rhine, a French vassal state.

This was replaced by the German Confederation after the Congress of Vienna, which then became the North German Confederation under Prussian dominance, which then became the German Empire, a single German state under a single monarch.
