Port Arthur in Tasmania, Australia, was famous during the 1800s for being Australia's most brutal convict colony.

The brutality of the prison came to light through the book by Marcus Clarke, "For the Term of His Natural life". The shocking treatment of the convicts was one of the main reasons why the prison was shut down.
