During the course of the war, Australia sent over 50,000 men to Vietnam. Australia was the only nation, other than the US, to send it's own tanks to Vietnam, their CENTURION medium tank, armed with a 84mm cannon (20 pounder in Australian terms). South Vietnamese troops (ARVNs-Army Republic of South Vietnam) used US tanks, the M41 Walker Bulldog light tank, armed with 76mm gun. Australia's Navy worked the gun-line off the North & South Vietnamese coasts; firing their destroyer's guns in support of allied troops ashore.

Did Australias contribution to the Vietnam war help?

Yes it did, you might be surprised to know that Australian forces were fighting in Vietnam 3 years before America even joined the war. Aussies were also the first to follow the Viet Kong into the tunnels. Australias contribution was modest with thousands deployed at any one time. The most famous battle of the war involving Australia was the Battle of Long Tan where 30 Aussies fought off 2000+ Viet Kong. It is a shame that the war was lost in the end.
