It became clear by 1937 that there may well be some kind of conflict in Europe and the British government were sure that the Germans would use gas-bombs as they did in the trenches in 1914-18, so many of the preparations were centred around gas. The ARP was set-up and the Local Defence Volanteers (later to become the Home Guard) started recruiting people who couldn't be sent to war (such as boys, old men and farmers). By 1939 air raid sirens and bomb shelters were in place, indeed many anecdotes of September 1939 place men digging shelters on the day war was declared on the 3rd. Tank blocks appeared on beaches and the 'blackout' started in September 1939 so the German couldn't detect where the towns were. evauation carried out in 1941. women worked in factories making weapons and machieniry.
