Calev ben Yefuneh, of the tribe of Judah, was one of the twelve men sent (Numbers ch.13) to spy out the land, meaning that he was physically very strong (Talmud, Sotah 34a). He was spiritually strong too, as we can see from the fact (Numbers ch.13) that he was one of the only two spies not to transgress in their report about the land. He was rewarded by God (Numbers ch.14), and later given his portion of the land in Hebron, by Joshua.
The Talmud (Sotah 12a) records how Calev married Miriam despite her being infirm, and nursed her back to health. Hur (Exodus ch.17) was their son, and Bezalel (Exodus ch.31) was a descendant of theirs.
