During the time that Nimitz was in the service, it was traditional that officers did not take part in politics, since they were obliged to serve loyally no matter who was elected. Many officers of that era never registered to vote until after retirement. They moved every two years usually, and so had no real home for the most part. For instance, Eisenhower had never voted before he voted for himself in 1952. He had kept his political proclivities so guarded that no one really knew what his party was. The Democrats tried to recruit Eisenhower before he revealed that he was a Republican.

Most military men are Republicans, and its probably safe to assume Nimitz was too. He had grown up in Texas, where almost everyone was a Democrat when he was a boy, but a lifetime in the service probably meant more in his political thinking.
