Christopher Columbus thought he had landed in Asia originally. He had no idea he had found a "new world." Of course, to the natives, it was far from new. Columbus wasn't exactly leader material, he was pretty much just lucky. In fact, his crew members consisted of murders and criminals that were locked away. That's all he could get the king and queen of Spain to forfeit because his boasts were so unconvincing.
Most of the lands that Christopher Columbus reached on his four voyages were in the Caribbean Sea. He also visited the coasts of Mexico and Central America.

Columbus reached all the major islands of the caribbean and Honduras in Central America which he called the Indies
Christopher Columbus believed the lands he reached in 1492 were part of Asia, specifically the East Indies, and he initially viewed them as rich in resources and ripe for exploitation. However, two facts that prove his opinion was incorrect are: first, the lands were actually part of the Americas, which were previously unknown to Europeans at the time; second, the indigenous populations were distinct cultures with their own societies and systems, contradicting Columbus's assumption that he had reached Asia.
separate voyages to the Caribbean from 1492 to 1504, he remained convinced that he had found the lands that Marco Polo reached in his overland travels to China at the end of the 13th century.

the conclusion that Vespucci had formed about the lands that he, Columbus, and Cabato had reached is that the land he, Columbus, and cabato had reached was not Asia. The land that they had found had to be another Continent.....the "new world" that some Europeans thought might be there.
