As the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and the head of the War Cabinet, Churchill along with his advisor's, made general policy decisions about the way in which the war would be fought. The day to day planning and directions during the air battles of the summer of 1940 were made by the Royal Air Force's senior officers, and were carried out by the squadron commanders of the RAF's fighter units.

Never have so many, owed so much, to so few.

The 'many' refers to the british people.

The 'few' refers to those that flew the fighter 'planes against a much larger force and won.

Churchill thought that the Battle of Britiain was deveastating, but Churchill really never showed this because he would always have a speech ready for saying that " We shall never surrender". The way Churchill never surrendered thwarted Germany's plans for domination. Churchill also sent in the RAF(Royal Air Force) to combat the German bombers and planes.
