Not gay, certainly: he had three wives and other affairs with women, and there is little reason to doubt the sincerity of these relationships. As to whether he was bisexual, well, hard to tell for certain. But certainly in his circles while in Europe it was not in the least uncommon, and he strikes me, at least in his younger years, as someone who would certainly have experimented, if only for the experience of it. There are also a few poems, such as the Sonnet "i like my body", which, though it is possible to read as being heterosexually inspired, somehow seem more apropos to a homosexual impetus.
